Background of the Study
Pragmatic strategies in digital communication determine how meaning is negotiated beyond literal language use. In Nigerian social media, particularly on Twitter, retweets serve as a mechanism for endorsing, critiquing, or reframing messages. This study assesses the pragmatic strategies employed in Twitter retweets, focusing on how users modify or amplify original messages through context, tone, and additional commentary. The retweet function enables users to participate in public discourse, often altering pragmatic markers such as politeness strategies, irony, or emphasis to reflect personal or group identities (Okeke, 2023). By examining the interplay between original tweets and their retweeted versions, this research reveals the layered nature of digital communication and how pragmatic adjustments contribute to the recontextualization of information. This investigation considers socio-cultural influences and the role of digital platforms in shaping pragmatic interactions, thereby enhancing our understanding of how language is used to construct meaning in online environments (Ibrahim, 2024).

Statement of the Problem
Although Twitter retweets are a common feature of digital communication, their pragmatic dimensions remain underexplored. Existing research has often focused on the dissemination of information rather than the subtle pragmatic alterations that occur during retweeting. The absence of detailed studies on how users employ pragmatic strategies in retweets limits our understanding of digital discourse in Nigeria. This study seeks to fill this gap by analyzing the pragmatic modifications made in retweets, thereby providing insights into how these strategies influence online interaction and public communication (Chinwe, 2024).

Objectives of the Study:

  1. To analyze pragmatic strategies in Nigerian Twitter retweets.

  2. To assess the impact of retweet modifications on message interpretation.

  3. To explore socio-cultural factors shaping pragmatic choices.

Research Questions:

  1. What pragmatic strategies are evident in Twitter retweets?

  2. How do these strategies affect the meaning of the original message?

  3. What socio-cultural influences drive these pragmatic modifications?

Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it deepens our understanding of pragmatic strategies in digital communication, particularly within Nigerian Twitter discourse. The findings offer valuable insights for linguists, communication specialists, and social media analysts seeking to understand how language is strategically used to shape public meaning (Okeke, 2023).

Scope and Limitations of the Study:
Limited to the topic only.

Definitions of Terms:

  1. Pragmatic Strategies: Methods used to convey meaning beyond the literal interpretation.

  2. Retweet: The sharing of another user's tweet with or without modifications.

  3. Digital Discourse: Communication conducted on online platforms.
